The Ultimate Guide to Dressing for Your Body Shape

Dress for Your Shape, Feel Your Best ✨

Before diving into trends or colours, the first step to looking great in any outfit is knowing your body shape.

I’ve spent countless hours trying on clothes, only to feel frustrated when they didn’t fit the way I hoped. Once I understood my shape, it becomes so much easier to choose clothes that flatter my figure and made me so much more confident.

There are five main body shapes, but don’t worry if you don’t fit perfectly into just one—you might be a mix of two, and that’s completely normal! The key is to identify the shape that most closely matches your proportions and go from there.

1. Neat Hourglass

Ask yourself:

  • Do you wear the same size top and bottom?
  • Do you have a clearly defined waist and bust?
  • Do you have a curved bottom?

If yes, you likely have a Neat Hourglass shape. This means your top and bottom halves are balanced, and your waist is naturally defined.

Top Tips:

  • Embrace fitted styles that highlight your waist and enhance your curves
  • Avoid boxy or shapeless clothes—they’ll hide your figure and make you appear larger than you are

2. Triangle (Pear Shape)

Ask yourself:

  • Do you wear a larger size on your bottom half?
  • Is your top half noticeably slimmer?
  • Do you have full hips or thighs and a defined waist?

If this sounds like you, you likely have a Triangle body shape. Your goal is to balance your silhouette by drawing the eye upward.

Top Tips:

  • Wear plain colours on your bottom half
  • Use patterns, stripes, or bold colours on your top half to draw attention upward
  • Structured tops or details at the shoulder (like puff sleeves) can help create balance

3. Oval

Ask yourself:

  • Do you carry weight around your middle?
  • Do you have rounded shoulders and a flatter bottom?
  • Do you feel uncomfortable tucking clothes in?

This suggests you have an Oval body shape, with your torso as the focal point. Your aim is to elongate your figure and bring attention away from the waistline.

Top Tips:

  • Choose clothes that hang from the shoulders for a clean line
  • Avoid bulky fabrics around your midsection
  • Use accessories (necklaces, scarves) to bring focus above the bust and below the hips

4. Rectangle

Ask yourself:

  • Are your shoulders and hips about the same width?
  • Do you have little waist definition?
  • Do you have a flat bottom and slim hips?

This body shape is all about adding curves and softening your silhouette.

Top Tips:

  • Avoid gathered or cinched waists unless they create the illusion of curves
  • Go for clean, uncluttered styles
  • Patterns like vertical stripes, checks, or polka dots work well for you
  • A fuller bust can help create more natural curves

5. Inverted Triangle

Ask yourself:

  • Are your shoulders broader than your hips?
  • Do you have a straight, squared shoulder line?
  • Does your top half appear larger than your bottom?

If so, you’re an Inverted Triangle. The goal here is to balance your broader top half by adding shape to your lower half.

Top Tips:

  • Keep details minimal around your shoulders—avoid heavy embellishments or wide necklines
  • Choose clothing that adds shape to your hips and bottom—like skirts with volume or wide-leg trousers
  • Avoid gathered waistlines that can emphasize your top half
